FLORAL DESIGN TAKEOVER OF FILOLI

Flowers at Filoli Historic House & Garden are part of its rich and vibrant legacy. The rooms of this grand Georgian Revival mansion are festooned with flowers in all seasons, thanks to the prolific cut flower gardens that are cared for by the talented horticulture staff.

Filoli's floral design tradition dates to the master plan of the estate's original owners, the Bourn family.

According to Filoli: Family Home, Historic Garden and Living Museum (2017), Filoli was designed to include many of the elements expected in a typical English country estate. Isabella "Bella" Worn was brought in to supervise the planting of the first garden. Bella and her sisters, Annie and Louise, owned Misses Worn, a San Francisco flower shop. "Their innovative floral design made them the society decorators for every leading function in the Bay Area for nearly half a century. Many credit the sisters with changing the concept of floral design from stiff bouquets toward the more natural and graceful style still popular today."

At Filoli, flowers grown in the cutting garden continue to be used for weekly floral arrangements throughout the house and the visitor and education center.
